Gene H. Barnett, M.D.

Gene H. Barnett, M.D., is director of The Cleveland Clinic’s Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center; director of The Cleveland Clinic Health System Gamma Knife Center; and vice-chairman and resident program director of the Department of Neurological Surgery.

Author of more than 100 articles published in leading medical journals, Dr. Barnett has a particular interest in the areas of neuro-oncology and computer-assisted surgery. In the late 1980s, he created the Center for Computer-Assisted Neurosurgery at The Cleveland Clinic, which established The Cleveland Clinic neurosurgery program as an innovator in advanced stereotaxis-- the identification of discreet areas of the brain that control specific functions-- and computer applications that resulted in the creation of a powerful surgical navigation system called frameless stereotaxy. He holds six patents in this area. Dr. Barnett is currently working on the development of advanced, 3-D ultrasound technologies, next-generation surgical navigation systems and intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging.

As the director of the multidisciplinary Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center, he coordinates the interplay between clinical practice and basic research. A major thrust of his research is in patterns of gene expression in brain tumors and the use of adoptive immunotherapy as a strategy for treating malignant gliomas.

Dr. Barnett is the past-president of the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society, and the Northeast Ohio Neurosurgical Society. He is a state representative for the Joint Council of State Neurosurgical Societies, serving as chairman of its Northwest Quadrant. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the Joint Section of Tumors and has been on the Board of Directors of the Joint Section of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. In addition, he is on the editorial boards of Neurosurgery, Journal of Image Guided Surgery and Select Reviews in Neuro-Oncology. He also is a reviewer for several neurosurgery journals.

He received his degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, completed his residency at The Cleveland Clinic Department of Neurosurgery, and his fellowship in Neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where he was a clinical and research fellow at the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.
